It has begun to be a regular event, getting together with friends and heading up to Liberty to check out our favorite shops and discover something new. Use this guide to plan a fun trip with your girlfriends to check out Liberty's historic downtown business district.
This month, we started off with a great cup (or two) of coffee at
Hammerhand Coffee (22 N Main St). They have seasonal, house made syrups that make for an amazing latte. Right now, get a twist on the PSL with the Spiced Maple Pumpkin syrup, a mix of cinnamon, clove, ginger, allspice, pumpkin and a hearty amount of maple syrup. They also recently released a house made Chai, and for the purist, the straight up coffee blends are exceptional. We initially stopped in for the coffee, but who could turn down fresh pastries or breakfast burritos to start our day of exploration.
Fully caffeinated, our next stop was to a home decor paradise,
Petals & Potpourri (1 E Kansas St.). The store is jam packed with seasonally rotating home goods, candles, accessories, clothing and more. I ended up getting three small Darren Gygi Home Collection canvas prints as a housewarming gift for my best friends. She loves them! The centerpieces and door swags the owner makes individually are amazing. There is so much variety that you can’t help but find a reason to make a purchase.
We stowed our purchases in the car and headed up the hill to William Jewell College to get our steps in and admire the historic neighborhoods surrounding downtown. William Jewell's campus is home to beautiful historic buildings, well maintained grounds and some amazing views from the top of the hill. We then walked west on Franklin Street and admired the front porches, landscaping and gorgeous historic homes. Along the way the Clay County Historical Society Historic Landmark plaque at 450 East Franklin Caught our eye. The Routt-Plumb House, called the "Castellated Mansion", was built circa 1860 by Col. Henry L. Routt who lead a Confederate raid on Liberty Arsenal in 1861, the first overt act of the Civil War in Missouri.

Once we made it back to square, the friendly shop cats in the window of
D’agee & Co Florist (18E. Franklin St) enticed us to stop in. There we found a variety of not only beautiful flowers and arrangements, but home décor and gift items – something for every occasion and so many reasons to come back another day.
By now, we had worked up an appetite and headed to one of Liberty's newest additions, Mudhole BBQ (416 E. Mill St.) for lunch. You may be familiar with the popular Mudhole food truck. They now have a brick and mortar restaurant just east of the Downtown square.
